Affiliate Linguistics programme

We welcome about 10 undergraduate affiliate students every year from all over the world.

Linguistics affiliate students can many of the modules offered to Linguistics degree students, ranging from modules about sentence structure (syntax), meaning (semantics and pragmatics), and pronunciation (phonetics and phonology), but you will also be given the opportunity to explore other themes, such as language acquisition or language processing. Many of the Linguistics lecturing staff carry out internationally recognised research and this work is strongly reflected in the modules we offer, making for enthusiastic and exciting teaching. Affiliate students are accepted for the full year, or for the autumn or spring term alone. Affiliate programmes in Psychology and Psychology and Language Sciences are also available.

Undergraduate affiliates attending UCL for a full year must take 120 credits worth of modules. Students attending UCL for either Term 1 only (the Autumn term), or for Term 2 only (the Spring term), must take modules totalling 60 credits.
*Linguistics undergraduate affiliate students must take at least half of their modules from the list of BA Linguistics modules ('PLIN' modules).

In addition, you can choose optional modules within the UCL Division of Psychology and Language Sciences, and from other UCL Departments, but please be aware that for many modules numbers are restricted.

Prospective affiliate students should consult their home university to confirm that they can get credit for the modules taken at UCL, and may consult the affiliate tutor at UCL to ensure that modules are running and that the modules chosen are at the right level for the student's academic background. Undergraduate affiliate students should receive a transcript with confirmed results after July.

Undergraduate Affiliate students taking 'PLIN' modules are assessed in the same way as degree programme students, wherever possible. You can find information on assessment methods via the list of modules, see above. Alternative assessments may be arranged for modules assessed by an examination scheduled to take place after you return to your home university.

Grading 
UCL grades are unlikely to be calculated on the same scale as that used in students' home universities. Students are sometimes unnecessarily alarmed at the apparently low numerical grades received because of a failure to understand this. Exam percentages will be converted to US grades according to a standard scheme - details can be found in literature circulated by UCL International Office at the beginning of term. Both the UCL percentage and the US grade will appear on the transcript sent to each student's home university.

Honour Code 
Students will be trusted to conduct themselves honourably in examinations and in preparing coursework. Particular attention is drawn to the UCL guidelines on plagiarism.

I have really enjoyed staying at UCL. Although I still have a couple of exams and courseworks left, it is sad to think about leaving here. I am happy to be a part of Linguistics Department at UCL. I felt that students in linguistics are very well supported.
