Who did you find inspiring at UCL and why?
One of my classmates had previously worked as a data scientist for several years before joining the programme. When I asked them why they chose to leave their job and return to university, they told me it was because of their deep interest in language. They believed that understanding how language works would also broaden their perspective on data science. I found their curiosity and pursuit of knowledge inspiring.
What is your fondest memory of your time here?
My fondest memory is from the very beginning of the programme, when I was assigned a group presentation with a classmate. We arranged to discuss our project at a café in Paddington - and that meeting turned out to be the beginning of a wonderful friendship. That classmate has since become one of my best friends.
Tell us a bit about the work you're doing now...
I currently work as an Editorial Assistant in the Books team at the Royal Society of Chemistry. My main responsibilities include checking manuscripts before they are handed over to production and liaising with book editors and authors to support them throughout the writing process.
How did your UCL degree help you get to where you are now?
The MSc programme introduced me to the world of academia, which played a big part in my decision to pursue a career in academic publishing. It trained me in scientific thinking and research, and also helped me develop resilience, both of which have proven to be valuable assets in my professional journey and personal growth.
What have been your career highlights?
One of the highlights of my career so far was taking over a book project that had been with us for quite some time and needed extensive development. I was still on probation at the time, but I managed to support the author and bring the book successfully to production. The author’s feedback was very encouraging - they said my professionalism and effectiveness were “like a breath of fresh air.” That comment has stayed with me as one of the most memorable moments in my work.
What would be your advice for current students?
Choose courses that interest you. Make the most of UCL’s academic resources. Make friends!
