Leonora Ross Skinner

What attracted you to study Cognitive Neuroscience at UCL and what was your fondest memory from your time on the programme?

I was always so fascinated by the brain and the intersection of artificial and organic intelligence. UCL is such a hub of science and with one of the best research centres in the world, we were very lucky to have incredible professors who really allowed us to think. I have made lifelong friends from our degree and we have all taken different pathways which shows the possibilities for diversity after studying at UCL.

How did your UCL degree help you get to where you are now? Were there any particular skills or experiences gained on the programme that you’ve found useful to this day?

UCL has been a wonderful grounding for my professional career. As such a globally renowned institution, it was such a great launch hub.
In my degree, I really learnt how people think and make decisions and within life this has been incredibly useful. Within my job I am always looking at innovation and scientific breakthroughs and so the research side from UCL and being able to create an academic thesis on an emerging area has been invaluable.

You earned a place in Forbes’ annual Top 30 Under 30 list of leading entrepreneurs and creatives in Europe. How does it feel?

It has forever been a goal of mine, because it is a group of young people fundamentally changing the future. I was just at the summit in Botswana and the gathering of ambition and visionaries was inspiring. I feel privileged to be on the list with such an exciting group of innovators.

Could you tell us a bit more about the work you’re doing now?

I am currently working in Venture Capital, investing in the most innovative companies around the world. I focus on Deeptech which involves ground-breaking revolutions in science and engineering. My fund, Molten Ventures, is a $2bn+ AUM entity with a focus on backing visionary global founders. We have invested in companies like Revolut, Trustpilot and Transferwise, and have the largest fund of fund programmes in Europe. My background is operational, having built up the AI unicorn Darktrace to IPO and after I joined Venture to invest in founders with the same hyper growth trajectory.

What would be your advice for current students?

I would also say to not be afraid of rejection, there is always a greater path planned, learn from it, be resilient and keep moving forwards. The world is your oyster! I went from STEM to finance and I really believe if you study something you love and have the right mindset the doors can open up for you. I would advise students to spend summers seeing what career path they want to pursue and never be afraid to ask questions.
