Mariam Aljunied
As Principal Specialist in Educational Psychology for Singapore’s Ministry of Education, UCL PALS graduate Mariam Aljunied shapes national policies for students with special educational needs.

Dr. Mariam Aljunied’s journey in psychology began at UCL, where she earned her MSc in Educational Psychology and later her PhD in Psychology in 1995 and 2006, respectively. Her training at UCL provided a strong foundation for both research and professional practice, equipping her with the expertise to drive meaningful change in Singapore’s education system.
After completing her studies, Mariam took on the role of Educational Psychologist with Singapore’s Ministry of Education, where she worked closely with students, educators, and policymakers to enhance support for children with special educational needs. The balanced emphasis between research and applied practice at UCL proved invaluable as she progressed in her career, taking on key leadership roles, including Assistant Director for Psychological Assessments and Research.
Now serving as the Principal Specialist in Educational Psychology, Mariam plays a pivotal role in shaping national policies and best practices for students with special educational needs. Her expertise influences the development of inclusive educational strategies, ensuring that every student receives the support they need to thrive.
Mariam’s connection to UCL remains strong. Through her continued collaboration with UCL’s Educational Psychology Department, she has fostered multiple partnerships between the Ministry of Education in Singapore and her alma mater, advancing research and professional training in the field.
