Professor David Cash (Professor of Neurology): "The Long, Silent Prelude: Imaging Alzheimer’s Disease Before Symptoms Emerge"
Professor Cash is an engineer who works closely with clinicians on imaging biomarkers in Alzheimer's disease and related forms of dementia. After obtaining his Bachelor’s Degree from Duke University in Biomedical Engineering in 1997, he then went on to Vanderbilt University and completed a MS and PhD in Biomedical Engineering with clinicians on imaging biomarkers in Alzheimer’s disease and related forms of dementia, particularly in the early stages of the disease and in clinical trials. His PhD work involved developing image-guided surgery systems for liver tumor resections. After moving to London for a postdoctoral fellowship at UCL's Centre for Medical Image Computing (CMIC) in 2005, he then spent five years in the private sector at a UCL-based startup IXICO Ltd., where he ran the imaging in multiple large scale studies and trials in Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s disease. Professor Cash returned to UCL in a joint position between the Dementia Research Centre and CMIC in 2011.
“I was incredibly honoured and grateful for the opportunity to give my inaugural lecture in front of family, friends, colleagues, and researchers from throughout UCL who I respect and admire. It was a night that I will never forget and one of the biggest highlights of my career to date. Working with such talented, kind, and hard-working individuals at the Institute and throughout UCL is an immense privilege, and I appreciate all the support they have provided over the years that helped me achieve this milestone. I would like to thank Professor Nick Fox in particular for his mentorship and his friendship over the years, as well as his incredibly thoughtful and kind words in his introduction and vote of thanks. I am very grateful for the support and the opportunities that the Institute of Neurology has provided to me. Finally, I want to thank my family for the constant love and encouragement that they have provided." Professor David Cash.
Introduction, closing remarks and Vote of Thanks were given by Professor Nick Fox, Joint Head of Department of Neurodegenerative Disease, UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology.
