It is the first time that the ADCD Speciality Group will be led by a UCL researcher.

The World Federation of Neurology (WFN) aims to foster quality neurology and brain health worldwide by promoting global neurological education and training, with an emphasis placed on under-resourced parts of the world.

The WFN currently represents 124 professional societies in all regions of the world.

The ADCD group has been active for over 60 years now. As the new chair, Dr Suarez-Gonzalez will be working with the executive committee to promote research and improve clinical practice in aphasia, dementia and other cognitive disorders across the globe.

This will be achieved through biennial ADCD Speciality Group meetings, the World Congress of Neurology, and the broad WFN’s educational programme.

The ADCD group is committed to fostering diversity, inclusion and cross-cultural neurology.  A main focus for Dr Suarez-Gonzalez will be to strengthen strategic bonds with Africa, ensuring that the continent has representation in the new executive committee and that work is done in partnership with the African Dementia Consortium.

Dr Suarez-Gonzalez also hopes to improve communication with and between members and stimulate international collaborations.

"I'm honoured and thrilled to be taking up my new role as Chair of the World Federation of Neurology Aphasia, Dementia and Cognitive Disorders specialty group”, she said. “I look forward to contributing to the legacy built by previous chairs to improve clinical practice in these disorders across the world.”
