As part of UCL PALS' ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility, a story of resourcefulness and cooperation has emerged from the UCL Division of Psychology and Language Sciences (PALS). The initiative, spearheaded by members of the UCL PALS Green Impact team, showcases how innovation can lead to the reduction of waste and the repurposing of materials.

Peter Howell, Professor of Experimental Psychology at UCL, found himself with an uncomfortable bench at home. This situation led to an inspiring collaboration with George Joseph, the Laboratory, Safety and Environment Team Manager within PALS. George approached Fred Dick, Professor of Auditory Cognitive Neuroscience and Director of the Birkbeck/UCL Centre for NeuroImaging (BUCNI), about a discarded leather banquette that was no longer in use. In a spirit of sustainability and collaboration, Fred readily agreed to donate this leather banquette to this sustainability project.

What followed was a remarkable transformation. George and Peter worked together to breathe new life into the discarded leather. They meticulously crafted two cushions and an upholstered seat portion, ensuring that virtually every scrap of leather and stuffing was repurposed.

The level of craftsmanship and attention to detail exhibited in this project is evident in the hand-stitched patterns on the cushions and the upholstered seat. The project showcases not just the project's environmental benefits, but also the dedication of those involved.

This initiative is a testament to the spirit of sustainability and collaboration that PALS is known for on UCL campus. UCL PALS remains committed to making sustainable practices an integral part of its academic and operational activities, inspiring change within the Division, the university and beyond.
