The Michael Mason Award is presented to recognise excellence in clinical or scientific research to an early stage researcher who is developing a body of original work in the field of rheumatology.

Professor Machado will receive the award and give a lecture at the BSR annual meeting 24-26 April 2023.

"I am absolutely delighted and honoured to receive the 2023 Michael Mason Award from the British Society of Rheumatology. I feel tremendously humbled to be recognized by my peers for excellence in clinical and scientific research. This award serves as a powerful motivation for me to continue pursuing my research program, which is focused on improving patient outcomes, and improving the lives of people with rheumatic and neuromuscular diseases." Professor Machado
“I am delighted Pedro has received this major award for his excellent research. His work which links neurology and rhematology disciplines is innovative and is proving highly productive.” Professor Michael Hanna, Director, UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology

"This prestigious Prize is a fitting tribute to Professor Machado. His exceptional contributions to multidisciplinary patient-cantered research have undoubtedly made a lasting impact in the fields of rheumatology and neuromuscular diseases. Its award is a testament to his dedication and hard work, and we are honoured to have been a part of his journey towards improving patient care. His tireless efforts in forging national and international collaborations have paved the way for ground-breaking advancements, and we are thrilled to offer him our heartfelt congratulations on this well-deserved recognition" Professor Sam Janes, Director of the Division of Medicine, UCL.

"It has been a great pleasure to have worked with Pedro over the last few years as he has demonstrated a notable desire to develop a career as a top-class clinical rheumatologist capable of doing outstanding research. His efforts to draw together the disciplines of rheumatology and neurology to facilitate his work in myositis has been inspired. His additional drive to help patients with ankylosing spondylitis has been most impressive. His COVID-19 work has changed clinical practice. He has led both national and international efforts to draw clinicians and basic researchers together and that surely must be the way forward. I think the award of the BSR's top clinical prize to him is thoroughly deserved". Professor David Isenberg, Emeritus Division of Medicine Professor, UCL.
