First awarded in 1963 by the Michael Foundation, The Michael Prize is one of the most highly regarded international awards for the best scientific contribution to progress in the field of epileptology. Receiving the Michael Prize as a recognition of their work is an important milestone for renowned researchers.
Dr Gabriele Lignani (Associate Professor, Clinical & Experimental Epilepsy, UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology) was awarded the prize in the field of experimental epilepsy research. He will receive the prize at the 35th International Epilepsy Congress, 2-6 September 2023.

The prize was originally set up to stimulate epilepsy research among young scientists (under 45 years of age) in Germany. Since 1963 (internationally since 1978), 73 researchers coming from 16 countries received the Michael Prize. From 2023, the prize is awarded in three categories “Pharmacology and pharmacotherapy”, “Psychiatry, psychology and neuropsychology” and “Experimental epilepsy research”
