UCL Arena is UCL's professional development pathway for teaching, overseeing a scheme of awards accredited by the Higher Education Academy giving teaching and support staff nationally recognised fellowships.

Professor Shanks joins a group of only 23 Principal Fellows awarded through the Arena Scheme at UCL since 2014. In receiving the award, Professor Shanks demonstrates a proven record of effective strategic leadership in academic practise and development, contributing to high-quality student learning at UCL. Professor Shanks said: “It’s a great honour to be awarded this Fellowship. I’d like to warmly thank the many generations of students who have taught me far more than I’ve taught them.”

Professor Alan Thompson, Dean of the Faculty of Brain Sciences, said: “Congratulations, this is excellent news for the Faculty and the entire UCL community. Our students and staff all benefit from having such effective leadership from David. All staff are encouraged to apply for HEA Fellowships, and this achievement will act as an inspiration for others.”
