Comprising around 50 experts from outside government (mostly academia) and the Civil Service, the Panel provides free advice to policy teams and analysts considering the design of an impact evaluation, from helping with power calculations to advising on appropriate quasi-experimental approaches.

TAP also provides training to civil servants on the benefits and technicalities of impact evaluations.

Professor Cooper joins the Panel as part of a refresh of the membership. The appointment is for two years, commencing 20th February 2020.

On her appointment to the panel, Professor Cooper said: “I was delighted to be invited to join the TAP, which works to ensure government policy is based on good quality evidence. We all know resources are limited, so it is critically important that publicly-funded money is spent as effectively as possible – on what works.”

Professor Cooper leads a research team at UCL Division of Psychiatry, developing and testing psychological interventions to prevent dementia and increase quality of dementia care.

“I have a particular interest in how the evidence base for policies affecting older people and people living with dementia is built and used,” commented Professor Cooper.
