The appointments come at an exciting time for the joint education programme at the two institutions, as we prepare for the 2020-2021 academic year. This will see the start of a new Bioscience Entrepreneurship MSc (led by Professor Fruttiger) in September, as well as the continuation of our leading postgraduate programmes in Ophthalmology (on which Professor Hay teaches), Optometry and Ophthalmic Practice. January 2021 will also see the first intake for our new PGCert in Telemedicine for Ophtalmology, further details of which will be announced soon.

These appointments will ensure continued representation of, and engagement with, our world-leading ophthalmology and vision science education across UCL IoO and Moorfields. Through our joint strategy, education has significantly grown over the past 18 months, and with Marcus and Gordon helping to shape its future and direction, we will be working with colleagues across both organisations to continue increasing its scope and ambition.
About the new Deputy Directors
Professor Gordon Hay
Gordon has worked in Emergency Ophthalmology and Ocular Oncology for 19 years. He is currently Service Director of Moorfields A&E/Urgent Care Services.
Gordon worked with Mr John Hungerford & Dr Judith Kingston in the Ocular Oncology and Retinoblastoma Services at Barts Hospital having undertaken his basic training in Ophthalmology/Ocular Oncology at Barts & The London NHS Trust. Gordon then had a career break in Australia, where he spent several years as an A&E Registrar at the Royal Brisbane Hospital then as a single-handed flying doctor and rural Medical Superintendent in Queensland.
He returned to the UK in 2004 to take up a post in Adult Ocular Oncology at Barts Hospital. In January 2015 he moved to the world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital, where he specialises in Emergency Ophthalmology and Ocular Oncology with Professor Mandeep Sagoo.
For many years, Gordon ran the Ophthalmology component of the Cambridge Graduate Course in Medicine. He also has 14 years of experience teaching Optometrists, Orthoptists, Nurse Practitioners and GPs all aspects of clinical care and examination skills. He has lectured widely to Ophthalmic trainees on Ocular Oncology in the United Kingdom and teaches on the internationally renowned Ophthalmology Master's degree at UCL, for which he leads the Emergency and Acute Ophthalmology Module. Gordon is also the Module Lead for the UCL Sumer School in Ophthalmology.
He holds a pilots licence and has flown widely throughout rural Australia and is a cogent proponent of using transferable skills from Aviation Training & Safety into medicine.

Professor Marcus Fruttiger
Marcus obtained his PhD in Neurobiology in 1994 at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland. He then worked as a postdoctoral and Wellcome Trust career development fellow at UCL in London, UK and took up a tenured position at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology in 2007.
Marcus's research is at the interface between biological and clinical research, aiming to understand pathobiological mechanisms in retinal diseases with vascular complications, such as Diabetic Retinopathy, Retinopathy of Prematurity, Macular Telangiectasia and Age-related Macular Degeneration.
In collaboration with clinicians at Moorfields Eye Hospital, his team uses patient phenotyping, genetic information and bio samples to learn more about genetic and molecular mechanisms that drive pathologies in the retina. Marcus is also passionate about teaching, and has for many years been actively involved in delivering UCL postgraduate taught courses, using modern teaching methods, such as blended learning, flipped teaching and eLearning.
He has created and run two MSc modules, and has recently developed a new Master's programme for UCL: an MSc in Bioscience Entrepreneurship, which aims to equip students with entrepreneurial skills in applied bioscience.
