UCL has been ranked 2nd worldwide for Psychology in the latest Times Higher Education rankings by subject, released today.

UCL is the only university in Europe among the top 10 in psychology, which is a new addition to this year’s subject rankings list.

Overall, UCL ranks 16th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2018.

The THE subject tables employ 13 performance indicators with weightings based on teaching (30%), research volume, income and reputation (30%), citations/research influence (27.5%), international outlook based on staff, students and research (7.5%), and industry income or innovation (5%).

In the psychology ranking, UCL performed particularly well in the teaching category, which includes indicators about the learning environment such as a teaching reputation survey and the student-to-staff ratio.

Professor Alan Thompson, Dean, UCL Faculty of Brain Sciences, said: “We are honoured to be recognised as one of the top universities in the world for psychology, and hope this accolade can help us to continue attracting the best minds and future leaders of the field.

“The rankings reflect our innovative and engaging programmes that integrate research into the heart of the curriculum. Our students work closely with some of the field’s foremost academics and clinicians and support the university in tackling some of the world’s most pressing challenges, such as seeking to improve the lives of people affected by mental health disorders through new treatments and a better understanding of the brain’s inner workings.

“As one ranking doesn’t tell the full story of UCL’s strengths in research, teaching and industry collaboration, we are committed to continually improving and setting the bar higher for ourselves.”

Professor Peter Fonagy, department head of UCL Psychology & Language Sciences, added: “Our students benefit from UCL’s Connected Curriculum, integrating research into all aspects of education, and inspiring teaching ensures that they have the full benefit of one of the world’s largest concentrations of cutting-edge research in psychology, neuroscience and mental health. We are proud to have introduced new four-year MSci programmes in psychology, one of the first of their kind in the UK, which offer a fourth year of study for undergraduates to further enhance our students’ educational experience.”
