Moorfields Eye Charity has launched its new strategy which brings together all aspects of its work in supporting partners UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The strategy for 2018 - 2024 sets out Moorfields Eye Charity’s core belief - ‘people’s sight matters’ - and its organisational purpose  - to ‘support Moorfields to discover, develop and deliver the best eye care.'

The charity’s strategy outlines five main objectives which include ambitions to:

  • Develop a new research, education and clinical care centre in the Kings Cross/St Pancras area by 2024 in partnership with Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL.
  • Be the leading charity for research into eye health.
  • Help Moorfields deliver outstanding patient care/experience.
  • Influence national policy to increase resources allocated to eye health.
  • Encourage and share knowledge to develop tomorrow’s experts.

Robert Dufton, chief executive of Moorfields Eye Charity said: “Everyday thousands of people around the world lose their sight. Our aim is to support Moorfields in a new world class eye health facility for integrated clinical care, teaching and research, benefitting patients across London, the UK and globally.”

To help realise these ambitions, the charity has recently appointed four new trustees to its board: Michael Izza, chief executive of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales; Dr Rob Jones, distinguished allied health professional and governor of Moorfields Eye Hospital where he is also a life-long patient; Johanna Moss, director of strategy and business development at Moorfields Eye Hospital; and Professor Sir Eric Thomas, academic clinician and former vice chancellor of the University of Bristol.

David Probert, chief executive of Moorfields Eye Hospital and trustee of Moorfields Eye Charity, welcomes the support the charity provides to Moorfields. He said: “The support that Moorfields Eye Charity offers Moorfields is vital to ensure that the hospital remains at the forefront of ophthalmic care and research, and is able to bring new treatments to patients affected by eye disease faster than ever before. Our strategic aims are fully aligned and I look forward to our continuing partnership to fulfil our future ambitions.”

Professor Andrew Dick, director of the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology said: “Moorfields Eye Charity’s mission and support is pivotal and ensures that as one of the world leading academic-clinical partnerships, the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Hospital continues to drive fundamental and discovery science into patient care and work together to create a new Moorfields and UCL integrated research, education and clinical care centre.”
