Dr Jenni Rodd, Experimental Psychology, gives the UCL Lunch Hour Lecture on 18 October on “Barking up the right tree: how do we understand what words mean?”

If you look up just about any word in a dictionary you will usually see a long list of possible definitions, yet it takes no apparent effort to figure out the intended definition of a word when it is used in everyday life.

Dr Jenni Rodd will talk about the cognitive mechanisms that allow people to make rapid ‘best guesses’ about a word’s meaning.

UCL’s Lunch Hour Lectures are an opportunity for anyone to sample the exceptional research work taking place at UCL, in bite sized chunks. Speakers are drawn from across the university, and lectures frequently showcase new research and recent academic publications. Lunch Hour Lectures are free, require no pre-booking, and are open to anyone on a first-come, first-served basis.
