Professor Charles Hulme has been elected a fellow of The Academy of Social Sciences in recognition of his use of social science for the public benefit.

‘It is a great honour to be elected to a Fellowship of the Academy of Social Sciences,’ said Prof. Hulme. ‘I believe this reflects the work that I have done in collaboration with many distinguished colleagues to develop methods to help improve the outcomes for children with reading and language difficulties.  I hope it will help to promote understanding of the importance of evidence-based interventions in education.’

Prof. Hulme was one of 84 leading social scientists, made up of academics, practitioners and policymakers, to have been recognised with the Fellowship. Professor Roger Goodman FAcSS, Chair of the Academy, made the announcement, “I am delighted that we have been able to confer a Fellowship on all these eminent social scientists. It is particularly gratifying to include a larger number of economists, policy makers and practitioners on this occasion. This is a result of our work to see representation from these areas increased to maintain balances between the individual disciplines and between academics and those working in the policy and practice communities. This gives the Academy legitimacy to speak on behalf of the social science community as a whole.”

Prof. Hulme has been at UCL since 2011, where he is currently the Chair of Psychology.
