We are delighted to announce that Dr Adam Liston, Senior Teaching Fellow and Course Director for MSc in Advanced Neuroimaging, UCL Institute of Neurology, has won a Provost’s Teaching Award.

The Awards recognise and reward UCL colleagues who are making outstanding contributions to the learning experience and success of our students. They celebrate excellence in teaching and showcase the leadership of our staff within UCL and nationally.

“I was delighted to hear that I had received a Provost’s Teaching Award – when a teaching activity goes well, enthusiastic feedback from students is a great reward but it’s also nice to be recognized by the Provost.” Dr Adam Liston, Senior Teaching Fellow and Course Director for MSc in Advanced Neuroimaging, UCL Institute of Neurology.
“We are very fortunate to have Dr. Adam Liston as part of our ION Education Unit team. Not only is he a talented communicator  and teacher, and the brains behind many award-winning teaching innovations, it is great to work with him. Adam is thoughtful, sensitive to students’ needs, kind, generous and he has a great sense of humour. What’s not to love?! This Provost’s Teaching Award is very well-deserved. Congratulations, Adam!”   Dr. Caroline Selai, Head of Education Unit, UCL Institute of Neurology.

Adam Liston joined the Education Unit, UCL Institute of Neurology in 2008 as a Course Director for the MSc in Advanced Neuroimaging and has since introduced various innovations on this course which have been recognised by this Award. These innovations include :

  1. securing a SLMS Education Innovation Award to acquire a tabletop MRI scanner, developing related group work activities for students and designing an assessment through their production of a Vlog on their use of it to image fruit & veg – this was to have an intended audience of A-level Physics students, who also formally assess the Vlog;
  2. developing a peer-led formative assessment task relating to MSc Library Projects to increase students’ assessment literacy and enhance feedback provision;
  3. launching a Distance Learning version of the course in 2015, developing online workshops for this and significantly widening the availability of the course.

Adam also regularly presents at the UCL CALT Teaching & Learning Conference, co-convenes teaching skills workshops with Dr Caroline Selai and hosts an annual bring-and-share food and film evening for students on his course, where each student brings some food representative of their own culture and one student chooses a film to screen that they feel represents something about their culture that they would like the rest of the cohort to know about.

The award ceremony will be held as part of the keynote of the UCL Teaching and Learning Conference to be held at the UCL Institute of Education on 19th April.
