This summer UCL will be welcoming students to the new International Summer School for Undergraduates.

As part of UCL's study abroad offering, the  2016 Summer School runs in July and August and is divided into two blocks, each spanning three weeks. There is a wide range of modules from many of UCL's academic departments, including Psychology and Language Sciences:

Psychology in Action

This module aims to develop students’ psychological literacy, through the cycle of enquiry and evidence. Students will be encouraged to think critically and evaluate their own behaviour through in-lecture experiments. A scientific approach will be developed through an appreciation of how empirical data can be used to test competing theories and simple questions will be dissected and examined. Experiencing this cycle of enquiry and evidence will give students the psychological literacy to integrate knowledge across psychology and apply it to the world around them.

The Sounds of Language: Principles of Phonetics

This module will provide a foundation for further study in linguistics, second language instruction and speech pathology. The module will provide an overview of vocal tract anatomy. Students will learn, through daily practical exercises, how to produce the consonants and vowels of the world’s languages, and transcribe them using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). The first part of the module will focus on English consonants and vowels and the second part will cover speech sounds not found in English (including clicks, implosives, ejectives, tones) and linguistic voice quality. Students will learn about the acoustic properties of speech and the tools used to study these properties.

All the Summer School modules are taught by UCL academics on the Bloomsbury campus and include lectures, seminars, group work as well as visits to areas of interest in and around London. Outside of the classroom, UCL offers dedicated accommodation within walking distance of the main campus, and a varied programme of social events to help you make the most of your time in the capital.

Join us for three or six weeks and discover how UCL can help you realise your potential!
