The World Health Organisation has re-designated the Department of Clinical & Experimental Epilepsy at UCL Institute of Neurology as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Research & Training in Neurosciences to September 2018.

Professor Josemir (Ley) Sander, UCL Institute of Neurology, & National Society for Epilepsy Chair of Epilepsy, will act as Head of the Collaborating Centre.

The Centre has been very active in helping the WHO in their Global Campaign against Epilepsy particularly in leading projects to demonstrate the feasibility of providing epilepsy care in resource-poor setting.  Staff from the Centre has been instrumental in organising and carrying out demonstration programmes in China, Brazil, Senegal and Georgia for instance.

They have also helped to develop the WHO mhGap programme by evaluating evidence and providing support to develop modules for epilepsy.  The centre will continue to support WHO’s work with a particular emphasis over the next four years on the revision of the mhGap programme, the neurocysticercosis initiative and essential drugs for epilepsy initiative.
