Dr Andreas Charidimou, a PhD student at the UCL Institute of Neurology, has been awarded the 2012 Belgian Stroke Council Award, for his work "Spectrum of transient focal neurological episodes in cerebral amyloid angiopathy: multicentre MRI cohort study and meta-analysis", a collaborative study undertaken in the UK and Belgium.
Sporadic cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is a very common disease in the elderly which is caused by the progressive amyloid-β deposition in the walls of cortical small vessels in the brain.
Dr Andreas Charidimou said, “The award is a great honour for me and for our team. It illustrates very well how collaborative multicentre efforts could be successfully tackle important clinical questions. It is also an opportunity to increase awareness of cerebral amyloid angiopathy as a cause of neurological symptoms.”
Dr David Werring (Reader in Clinical Neurology in the Institute’s Stroke Research Group, Department of Brain Repair and Rehabilitation), and Andreas’s PHD Supervisor, commented that, “This work is important, as it indicates that transient focal neurological episodes in cerebral amyloid angiopathy might be a useful way to stratify the risk of intracerebral haemorrhage in the way we do for TIAs and ischaemic stroke. The study highlights the key role of blood-sensitive MRI sequences in investigating these types of episodes to make sure patients get the right treatment.”
