Overview
The DCAL Library results from a donation by Professor Bencie Woll of her personal collection of books, journals, and dissertations on sign languages and deafness. All books in the collection should have a DCAL Library stamp on the first page or on the inside cover, and a colour-coded sticker on the spine. Items are organised into four categories: general books (green sticker), conference proceedings (blue sticker), dissertations (red sticker), and reference materials (yellow sticker). Items are organised on the shelves alphabetically according to author’s surname, so please ensure that you return the book to the box labelled as Returned book and do not place it to the shelves. Reference materials (with the yellow stickers), primarily dictionaries of sign languages from around the world, have been organised in alphabetical order by language (e.g. resources about American Sign Language are located together under 'A'). The library also includes relevant specialist journals, such as Sign Language Studies and Deaf Worlds, as well as journals of wider interest, such as Mind and Language. Some back-copies of journals are available, and the latest issues of all journals should be displayed on the top shelves of the journal section.
Access for staff and research students
Access to the DCAL Library materials is available for all DCAL staff and associates. Given the nature of the collection, however, items are reference only and not available for loan. Members of staff and associates are welcome to remove items from the collection and use them at their desks, but all items must remain within DCAL (at 49 Gordon Square) and not be taken out of the building. This is to ensure that no items are lost, and also to facilitate access to the collection for all.
An internal borrowing system is in place for when staff members or associates wish to borrow library resources from the DCAL Library. All books contain a borrowing slip on the inside cover of the item which is to be removed, completed, and put into the mini filing cabinet located in the Library before borrowing. This system ensures that other members of staff are aware of the whereabouts of library items and who to contact if they require the use of the item. When returning the item, all patrons must return the borrowing slip to the inside cover of the item before returning the resource to the library shelves. A full copy of the internal library borrowing procedure is displayed as a laminated poster on the book shelves in the DCAL Library.
Access for students
Access to the DCAL Library collection may be arranged for students taking courses taught by DCAL staff members, but students may not remove any item from the library. With permission from a librarian, it may be possible for students to take items down to the photocopier in reception, but the items must be returned and placed in the return box as soon as photocopying is complete.
Library catalogue
The latest version of the DCAL Library catalogue, together with a copy of the Endnote software package, is in the 'LIBRARY' directory on the DCAL shared server. If you wish to search the catalogue for DCAL Library items, please be aware that new items are being added to the collection at all times. Thus, a new item may not have been added to the catalogue as yet so please check with the DCAL librarian or have a look in the New Books box, you must leave a note in the box stating your name and name of author and title of item/s that you have taken.
Requesting new resources
If you wish to suggest a new title to be added to the collection, please forward the following information to the DCAL librarian: author, year of publication, title in full, edition (if relevant), and publisher. Always check that the item is not already part of the collection before requesting an item. If you do not feel that the item will be of general interest to DCAL staff or you do not anticipate an ongoing need for the publication, please consult the UCL Library catalogue to see if you can borrow it through that, or an associated library. Please be aware that subscriptions to journals are extremely expensive, so it is unlikely that any new journal subscriptions will be organised. Suggestions for new audiovisual material are welcome.
