Yuyi Ren, MSc Clinical Ophthalmology

1. What is your educational background?

In 2018, I graduated with a Bachelor of Clinical Medicine degree in China. I am currently studying MSc Ophthalmology in UCL.

2. What are your motivations for pursuing a graduate-level qualification?

I am pursuing a career in medicine, so it is essential that I have a strong medical background. A degree in Ophthalmology will deepen my knowledge and understanding in this subject.

I found that my undergraduate degree in medicine did not cover ophthalmology as it was focused on: internal medicine, surgery, pediatric, obstetrics and gynecology.

3. Why did you apply to UCL for graduate study?

UCL is an internationally recognised university and is ranked top 10 in the world. The Institute of Ophthalmology has a partnership with Moorfields Eye Hospital, and it is considered the world’s best eye hospital. This is an invaluable educational experience for me.

4. What are your career plans once you’ve completed your current programme of study at UCL?

I have received an offer to study a PhD in the Institute of Ophthalmology.

5. Do you think studying at UCL Institute of Ophthalmology is a good investment?

Yes. I believe that studying at the Institute has been a great investment.

6. What is it like studying in London and how do you think it has benefited your studies?

London is an international city where everyone is open-minded regardless of their different backgrounds. I settled in very easily and have made many lifelong friends.

7. How do you think the system of learning/researching at UCL differs from that in your own country?

Studying at UCL meant that I was able to pick up English a lot quicker than if I was studying in my home country.

8. Is there anything else you would like to say about your time at the Institute of Ophthalmology?

The lecturers have all been very friendly and welcoming. In particular, I would like to thank my personal tutor, Professor Andrew Dick, who has been very supportive and helpful. His positive outlook lifted my spirits during challenging times especially as I was trying to adjust to studying and living in a new country.
