Kogilan Paramananthan

Name: Kogilan Paramananthan
Degree Title year and year of Programme: Orthoptics (pre-registration) MSc
Nationality: British

Why did you choose to apply to this programme?

It was vital for me to be able to make a difference in patients’ lives. In addition, being an Orthoptist can be rewarding, as you benefit from working with children and adults. Being in a role whereby you can improve patients’ quality of life can be enriching. Orthoptics MSc will provide the chance to work within NHS – a world-leading organisation in the level of care it delivers and making people’s lives better. Orthoptics provides the opportunity of having a diverse career path, such as being a clinical practitioner, management, research, education, and many more extended roles.

What have you enjoyed most about the programme so far?

The quality of teaching has been second to none, taught by highly trained professionals in the given field, making the subject more enjoyable as their enthusiasm rubs off on us. The mixture of theory-based learning and clinical practice is excellent. The level of depth of a subject taught has made me feel confident. Placements have supplemented the learning process – giving confidence in your ability and witnessing the developing vision in various patients.

What are your future career goals?

Once qualified as an Orthoptist I would like to specialise in an extended role in such as stroke - as I find it satisfying being able to monitor and help with recovery process. Once I am experienced enough, I would like to embark on management roles.

What would be your top tip for incoming students?

To be excited and enjoy the course. There will be lots of hard work but get ready to be rewarded for your progress. Embrace the opportunities that will come with placement and learn from them.
