Our innovation promise
We continuously develop innovations and discoveries with high market potential.
Our close partnership with Moorfields Eye Hospital’s patient data, alongside our expertise in imaging, analytics, and artificial intelligence, enables us to rapidly advance patient outcomes by efficiently progressing into clinical trials.
There are growing opportunities for corporate and philanthropic partners to collaborate with us to deliver real-world value in eye health. We attract not only pharmaceutical companies, but also consumer health companies, screening and digital health services, technology firms looking to expand into clinical diagnostics, as well as health services innovators seeking to build upon our research-driven platform.
What we can do
Eye research provides critical insights into overall human health, enabling the detection of systemic conditions, such as diabetes and neurological disorders, before symptoms appear elsewhere.
Eye study reveals the basic nature of molecules, cells and tissue, vascular networks, inflammation, genetic and cellular mechanisms, ageing and the brain’s role in seeing and perception. This leads to potential in:
- Imaging solutions and analysis, enabling new types of diagnostics
- Disease detection
- Tools to measure the brain’s role in seeing and perception
- Analysis of biomarkers
- Screening tools for population health
- Gene- and cellular-levels insight for therapy
- Integrating vision-related technology into global product lines
- Biological process insight, for example in cell ageing and rejuvenation
- Use of data analysis and AI to predict risk and patient response
- Oculomics for diagnosis and screening
- Health services innovation and access
Our enterprise promise
We seek commercial partners to licence or commercialise innovations that are ready for advanced testing and deployment.
The UCL Institute of Ophthalmology actively engages in multiple knowledge exchange initiatives in collaboration with partners to improve eye health and wider health diagnostics. Our highly collaborative environment supports easy access to multiple disciplines to to effectively address complex challenges.
Foundations and public funders support our research with a view to deployment in both niche and universal vision markets to address unmet needs, for example in macular disease and inherited retinal disorders. Our leadership can serve as consultants, using expertise to accelerate impact.
Value
Our co-located facility with Moorfields Eye Hospital is recognised as a leading centre for eye and vision research globally.
In 2027 we will move to a state-of-the-art building in Kings Cross in London, near the European headquarters of global technology firms such as Google and bio-incubator space. We have pioneered some of the most innovative research and clinical trials in the world, while Moorfields has achieved award-winning research participation outreach that has reached millions.
Unparalleled population-level data plus agile science, clinical practice and technology expertise positions us to advance discovery and clinical trials.
