We study neural circuits involved in movement in order to understand how motor circuit plasticity contributes to recovery of movement in disease or injury. The ultimate goal is to develop new strategies to improve movement in people with neurological disorders.

We have developed preparations and methodologies to study neural circuits in the mouse brain stem and spinal cord and their roles in motor behaviours. We use a variety of tools, for example: genetic models to identify and manipulate specific neuronal populations; electrophysiology in reduced preparations to study biophysical properties of identified neurons; immunohistochemsitry to understand synapse formation; computational methods to gain insight into neuronal or circuit function; and motor behavioural analysis. Using these methods, we have identified a number of key circuits, including neural circuits underlying hand grasp function.
