In2research: Student Experience
In2research offers opportunities to develop qualitative research skills and gain a clearer understanding of what pursuing a PhD involves.Through the support of placement hosts and programme workshops.
“I applied for In2research because it seemed like a great opportunity to network, and develop new skills, things you wouldn't really do anywhere else. When looking for information on postgraduate research elsewhere, I found that the information is quite vague. I've learnt so many new skills, and I’ve discovered the amount of jobs that are available and how everyone contributes to the research. The highlight of the placement was being able to attend the research open day at UCLH (UCL Hospitals) - it was amazing. In2research has taught me a lot about what the day-to-day life of a PhD student is like - it doesn't seem as daunting as before. My mentor helped me with my CV and the PhD application process, and showed me how I can make my application stand out. Now I feel I definitely know how to apply for a PhD, and I feel more confident.”
"On my placement, I looked at hearing loss and increased risk of dementia, as well as audiological care. I’m working on a scoping review, using the software Covidence to analyse existing data, finding gaps in the literature and new avenues for research. My work will allow people to understand the overall scope of how far research has come and where the gaps are. Since it's an international study, the next steps will be talking to different experts and doctors around the world.”
"Both hosts have been really supportive in making me feel comfortable. Everything has been new, so they’ve been coaching me through what I'm supposed to do. To someone thinking of doing In2research: don't think twice, just go ahead and apply, because you gain so much out of it. You're going to come out feeling like you've learned so much."
“It's been an excellent experience and I feel privileged to be able to provide a very capable student with this opportunity to learn how we conduct a research project and the skills involved. Our work would’ve been a lot slower without her involvement. I would certainly be happy to host again.”
"UCL promotes equality in every aspect of its work. I think it's important for a research organisation to offer opportunities to students from backgrounds which may make them less likely to be exposed to research and how it is conducted. Professionally, we see so many people later into their career who don't have a solid foundation. If we can provide that earlier on, it helps in the future and helps research in return. Building that relationship early in their career is mutually beneficial. Volunteering with In2research, you'll see fantastic students and get fantastic support, and you open the gates for many people who want to get into research.”
