Detecting irony: the role of visual and acoustic cues
Title: Detecting irony: the role of visual and acoustic cues
Abstract: To avoid misunderstandings and communicative failures, ironic speakers may exploit metacommunicative cues to alert interlocutors that their remark should not be taken at face value but need to be reinterpreted (typically, as conveying the opposite meaning). In this talk, I will present a series of studies that have been conducted to assess the relative contribution of acoustic and visual cues for the detection of speakers’ ironic intent.
