Professor Heather Mortiboys, SiTRAN
Talk title: Mitochondrial phenotypes across neurodegenerative diseases: cell type matters.

Speaker Bio:
Dr. Heather Mortiboys is a Professor of Cellular Neuroscience and Metabolism at the University of Sheffield. She is also Deputy Faculty Director for Research and Innovation and Head of Division of Neuroscience. She earned her PhD from the International Max Planck PhD Program in Dresden Germany, with a summa cum laude. She then worked as a research associate in the Neurology department at the University Hospital Dresden. Following this, Dr. Mortiboys joined the Neuroscience department at the University of Sheffield to establish mitochondrial investigations in models of Parkinson’s Disease. She started her own lab in September 2013 when she became a Parkinson’s UK Senior Research Fellow. The lab focuses on mitochondria in neurodegenerative diseases, mainly Parkinson’s Disease. Her research encompasses mitochondrial function, DNA, morphology, recycling, and links with other cellular pathways. Dr. Mortiboys' research aims to enhance the understanding of the causes of mitochondrial mechanisms in neurodegenerative conditions and in vitro drug screening for molecules that improve mitochondrial function in patient tissue. Her lab is also interested in investigating mitochondrial abnormalities in Alzheimer’s Disease, Motor Neuron Disease and rare disease patient-derived cells.
In addition, Heather is committed to PPIE, which is embedded in all of her projects. She is an enthusiastic mentor for members of her own research group and others, committed to furthering careers whichever direction that takes. She was nominated and selected as an Inspirational Women at the University of Sheffield in 2024 for her leadership and mentorship in this area.
