Title: Understanding autistic masking as a response to stigma
Abstract:
Autistic masking is often viewed as a social strategy employed to 'blend in' with neurotypical individuals. However, recent evidence suggests that masking develops not just as a social affiliation mechanism, but as a response to stigma. In this talk I will explore the developmental social context that fosters impression management, considering an individual's response to stigma or trauma and the role that this may play in masking across the lifespan
