Queen Square Brain Bank Neuropathology Workshop
The QSBB neuropathology workshop will provide the participant with an understanding of the basic neuropathological features of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and frontotemporal lobar degeneration.
Diagnostic criteria of neuropathological hallmark lesions (e.g., Aβ plaques, neurofibrillary tangles/ threads, astrocytic tau pathologies, Lewy bodies/ neurites and various TDP43 pathologies) will be explained and various staging schemes of misfolded protein pathology spread will be discussed (e.g., Braak & Braak neurofibrillary tangle stages, Braak Lewy body pathology stages, topographical progression of amyloid-β pathology (Thal phases), CERAD score, most recent NIA-AA criteria, McKeith criteria etc.). This workshop will provide the participant with a basic knowledge to the approach of the pathological diagnosis of common neurodegenerative diseases.
The target audience of this course is neuroscientists and clinicians and it is expected that the knowledge gained from this course will aid in the planning and conducting of scientific investigations. The workshop is not intended to platform the most recent scientific developments, but would be of interest to neuroscientists, PhD students and physicians whose research is based around the neurodegenerative diseases.
The lectures will introduce QSBB and detail the diagnostic pathological criteria for the different neurodegenerative diseases in the context of relevant neuroanatomy. The lectures will be supplemented with interactive practical session where participants will have the opportunity to experience and discuss the diagnostic approach of neurodegenerative diseases. These cases will be available to view in a digital format prior the workshop for registered participants and during the workshop on the screen as well as on personal laptops.
