POSTPONED: Master class – Personalised learning or adaptive learning

The fourth in our Master Classes in Educational Technology series is given by  Prof Nora Colton, Professor of Global Vision and Eye Health Education & Pro Vice Provost (Postgraduate Education), UCL & Moorfields Eye Hospital, and Dr Charles Princel, Director of Student Success, The University of East London. The class is open to staff and students at UCL and Moorfields.

Adaptive learning technologies are those that monitor student progress and use data to modify instruction.

The ways in which such technologies are being incorporated into specialised training, scalable courses and degree programmes has wide application.

This workshop will illustrate three examples: scaling adaptive instruction with student data, personalising education through a pre-sessional adaptive foundation course for students who might be new to the subject area, and teaching using adaptive case studies or scenarios.

About the speakers

Professor Nora Colton is Joint Director of Education at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Hospital and Pro-Vice-Provost (Postgraduate Education) at UCL. A Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Professor Colton has extensive experience of teaching and learning, not only as a Professor of Economics, but as a senior leader in higher education. She has considerable experience of digital education in higher education.

Dr Charles Prince is the director of the Centre for Student Success at the University of East London. His doctoral study focused on several ‘pillars’, including developing a global educational perspective. Dr Prince visited universities in Doha, Helsinki and Hong Kong, where he learned about new approaches to education and how universities achieve their goals and overcome challenges in their country-specific contexts. He lists his other pillars as creativity and innovation to meet student needs; leadership that values lifelong learning and anticipates future trends; and access, success and equity in opening up formal and informal education to students to help them to achieve their goals as learners and citizens.
