Assessment and Management of Balance Disorders in Children
The course is designed for all clinicians with an interest in the assessment and management of children with dizziness who have some basic knowledge of vestibular assessment and rehab in adults.

The course is designed for all those clinicians who have a basic knowledge of vestibular assessment and rehabilitation as applied to adults but are looking to build on this foundation and develop their interest and skills in the assessment and management of children with dizziness.
Delegates will be provided with a pre-course reading list and presentations, which will maximise their learning opportunities during the course. Course materials are included in the registration fee.

The course covers a wide range of topics including:
- Functional anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system
- Development of normal balance function in children and common motor milestones
- Common peripheral and central causes of dizziness in children

- Role and value of non-audiological tests
- Genetics of Vestibular Disorders

- Modification of objective balance assessments when testing children and case studies
- VEMPs and VHIT in children

The course will run over three consecutive days. Seminar-style, interactive teaching is supplemented by:
- group exercises and class discussion
- practical demonstrations including videos
- case studies
- self-directed reading and pre-reading around current structure and practice in paediatric audiology services
Following this course, you will:
- Understand the functional anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system and development of normal balance function in children and common motor milestones.
- Have a knowledge of common peripheral and central causes of dizziness in children.
- Understand the value and implementation of patient and parent centred interviews.
- Have a knowledge of non-vestibular causes of dizziness, role and value of non-audiological tests and genetics of vestibular disorders.
- Understand the value of the medical management of the dizzy child.
- Know how to carry out a range of clinical tests of balance including: - eye movement assessments, clinical tests of the vestibular ocular reflex, gait, static and dynamic equilibrium, positioning tests.
- Develop skills in the management of BPPV.
- Have knowledge of the physiotherapist approach in the assessment of the dizzy child.
- Understand how objective balance assessments should be modified when testing children.
- Develop skills in carrying out VEMPs and VHIT in children.
- Develop skills in the application of vestibular rehabilitation in children.
You'll receive a certificate of attendance if you attend all three days.

The Paediatric Assessment masterclass can only be booked as a full course (i.e. there will be no 1 day, 2 day etc options).

Places can be booked by credit/debit card up to 48 hours before the start of the course, subject to availability.
For payments by invoice
To secure a place, a purchase order document must be received within 7 working days of the course start date.
All cancellations and refund requests for Ear Institute Short Courses must be submitted in writing to: ear.courses@ucl.ac.uk.
1. Cooling‑Off Period
You may cancel your place within 7 days of making the payment and receive a full refund, unless this 7‑day period falls within 14 days of the course start date. In that case, the standard cancellation terms apply.
2. Cancellations Made After 7 Days of Payment
If you cancel more than 7 days after payment and 14 or more days before the course start date, you will receive a refund minus a 20% administration charge.
3. Cancellations Made Less Than 14 Days Before the Course Start Date
If you cancel your place fewer than 14 days before the course start date, no refund will be issued.
4. Replacement Delegates and Full Courses
A refund request may be considered if the course is full and a replacement delegate is found to take your place. This includes nominating a colleague or offering the place to someone on the waiting list. A 20% administration charge applies.
5. Deferrals
It is not possible to defer your place to a course running in the next academic year. Moving your booking to another course running in the same academic year might be possible subject to availability.
6. Refund Payments
Approved refunds will be processed within 30 days of receiving your written cancellation and issued using the same method of payment.
