Paediatric Habilitation

This four-day course combines theoretical evidence with practical knowledge and skills which you'll be able to apply immediately in whatever clinical setting you work in.

You’ll also have an opportunity to network with a range of professionals from different backgrounds.

The course is updated annually to reflect the latest trends in technology and clinical practice.

1. To establish core skills in managing hearing loss in infants and children to optimise life-long auditory potential
2. To apply verification and validation techniques for amplification and listening technologies
3. To integrate care across a team of professionals, centred around the needs of the family
4. To be able to present and support early communication options around family choice
5. To understand and derive functional measures of benefit for decision-making on developing listening and expressive speech options
6. To introduce a culture of reflective practice, service evaluation and professional learning
7. To apply new techniques in clinical placements and implement change within departmental practice if appropriate
8. To constructively evaluate and recognise constraints in observed clinical practice
9. To understand the responsibility conferred by professional training in paediatric audiology and importance of continually developing knowledge and practice.

The course runs for four days from Tuesday to Friday. Seminar-style, interactive teaching is supplemented by:

• group exercises and class discussion
• practical demonstrations using videos
• completion of case-studies with peer-evaluated clinical procedures
• self-directed reading and pre-reading around current structure and practice in paediatric audiology services

This course is led by Dr Hannah Cooper, with lectures and seminars given by experienced paediatric audiology clinicians and habilitation professionals using real case examples. 

Knowledge and understanding of:

1. Methods for verifying and demonstrating functional benefit from hearing aid amplification in babies and children
2. Provision of safe, effective and wearable amplification throughout childhood years
3. Use of new technologies in amplification and remote microphone technology
4. Support for education and literacy skills for the hearing impaired child in the classroom
5. Importance of effective intervention for neural stimulation from early life
6. Importance of auditory attention and communication for deriving meaning from sounds in early life
7. Pivotal role of the family in mediating communication development in infants and children
8. Ways of presenting information for parents and supporting their role as the main facilitator in their child’s communication potential
9. Timely decision making and onward referrals for infants and children
10. Methods of disseminating information to other support agencies with parents at the core.

• You'll receive a certificate of attendance if you attend all four days.
• This course, including assessments, is suitable for British Academy of Audiology Higher Training Scheme candidates undertaking the Paediatric Habilitation module. 

 £770 without assessments; £1400 with assessments (certification)

This masterclass can only be booked as a full course (i.e. there will be no 1 day, 2 day etc options).

All cancellations and refund requests for Ear Institute Short Courses must be submitted in writing to: ear.courses@ucl.ac.uk. 

1. Cooling‑Off Period 

You may cancel your place within 7 days of making the payment and receive a full refund, unless this 7‑day period falls within 14 days of the course start date. In that case, the standard cancellation terms apply. 

2. Cancellations Made After 7 Days of Payment 

If you cancel more than 7 days after payment and 14 or more days before the course start date, you will receive a refund minus a 20% administration charge. 

3. Cancellations Made Less Than 14 Days Before the Course Start Date 

If you cancel your place fewer than 14 days before the course start date, no refund will be issued. 

4. Replacement Delegates and Full Courses 

A refund request may be considered if the course is full and a replacement delegate is found to take your place. This includes nominating a colleague or offering the place to someone on the waiting list. A 20% administration charge applies. 

5. Deferrals 

It is not possible to defer your place to a course running in the next academic year. Moving your booking to another course running in the same academic year might be possible subject to availability.  

6. Refund Payments 

Approved refunds will be processed within 30 days of receiving your written cancellation and issued using the same method of payment.
