Paediatric Assessment

The course combines theoretical evidence with practical knowledge and skills which you'll be able to apply immediately in whatever clinical setting you work in. You’ll also have an opportunity to network with a range of professionals from different backgrounds. The course is updated annually to reflect the latest trends in technology and clinical practice.

You should have previous knowledge and experience in general audiology.

• Cognitive and behavioural development of infancy and childhood
• Objective hearing tests in infants and children
• Subjective hearing tests in infants and children
• Pivotal role of the family in communication development in infants and children
• Roles and remit of the audiologist and others within a reciprocal team for early assessment and intervention built around the individual child and family

The course will run for four days from Tuesday to Friday. Seminar-style, interactive teaching is supplemented by:

• group exercises and class discussion
• practical demonstrations using videos
• case-studies
• self-directed reading and pre-reading around current structure and practice in paediatric audiology services

This course has lectures and seminars given by experienced paediatric audiology clinicians and other professionals using real case examples.

Knowledge and understanding of:

• Cognitive and behavioural development of infancy and childhood
• Appropriate environment, arousal state and acoustic signals for assessing behaviour change in detection of sound
• Use of evoked potentials for deriving information on auditory thresholds in early life
• Value and constraints of different test techniques in deriving audiological certainty for effective decision making about hearing intervention
• Pivotal role of the family in communication development in infants and children
• Ways of supporting parent information, inclusion and their role as the main facilitator in their child’s communication potential
• Roles and remit of the audiologist and others within a reciprocal team for early assessment and intervention built around the individual child and family
• Methods of disseminating information for informed decision-making by relevant agencies with parents at the core.

• You'll receive a certificate of attendance if you attend all four days.
• This course is suitable for British Academy of Audiology Higher Training Scheme candidates undertaking the Paediatric Assessment Newborn module and the Paediatric Assessment 6 month+ module.

The Paediatric Assessment masterclass can only be booked as a full course (i.e. there will be no 1 day, 2 day etc options).

All cancellations and refund requests for Ear Institute Short Courses must be submitted in writing to: ear.courses@ucl.ac.uk. 

1. Cooling‑Off Period 

You may cancel your place within 7 days of making the payment and receive a full refund, unless this 7‑day period falls within 14 days of the course start date. In that case, the standard cancellation terms apply. 

2. Cancellations Made After 7 Days of Payment 

If you cancel more than 7 days after payment and 14 or more days before the course start date, you will receive a refund minus a 20% administration charge. 

3. Cancellations Made Less Than 14 Days Before the Course Start Date 

If you cancel your place fewer than 14 days before the course start date, no refund will be issued. 

4. Replacement Delegates and Full Courses 

A refund request may be considered if the course is full and a replacement delegate is found to take your place. This includes nominating a colleague or offering the place to someone on the waiting list. A 20% administration charge applies. 

5. Deferrals 

It is not possible to defer your place to a course running in the next academic year. Moving your booking to another course running in the same academic year might be possible subject to availability.  

6. Refund Payments 

Approved refunds will be processed within 30 days of receiving your written cancellation and issued using the same method of payment.
