GWAS Identifies 44 Independent Associated Genomic Loci for Self-Reported Adult Hearing Difficulty
This landmark study identifies 44 genes that raise risk of age-related hearing loss.
This paper provided a major breakthrough in the understanding of the causes of age-related hearing loss. Previously, very few genes had been identified as being involved. This study was undertaken in ~250,000 people over the age of 40 and identified 44 genes that were associated with the risk of losing our hearing as we age, giving us an idea of which mechanisms are involved and potential therapeutic targets.
