Deaf Awareness: Online Training for Doctors

This short online course for audiologists will help you better understand and communicate with D/deaf and hard of hearing (HoH) patients.
You'll learn about patients' real life experiences and doctors' perspectives through watching videos.
You'll also learn about practical things you can to in your workplace to improve service provision for D/deaf and HoH patients.
The course is entirely self-directed and online so you can study at your own pace.
This course has been developed by the UCL Deafness Cognition and Language (DCAL) Research Centre. DCAL brings together leading Deaf and hearing academics and researchers in the fields of sign linguistics, psychology, and neuroscience.

Course content and structure
The course takes approximately 2 hours to complete.
It covers the following topics:
- What is deaf awareness and why it is important in a health care setting?
- Legislation: what you need to know and your obligations to make reasonable adjustments
- Understanding different perspectives of deafness
- Communication strategies for communicating well with deaf and HoH patients
- Improving your service to D/deaf and HoH patients
Each topic has several lessons. Each of these is interspersed with reflection points to encourage reflective thinking and short quizzes to test your understanding.
The course also includes a toolkit to help you improve service provision to D/deaf and HoH patients.
Assessment and certificates
You'll receive a UCL Certificate of Participation once you have successfully completed all the quizzes.
This course has been accredited by the Royal College of General Practitioners. Accreditation demonstrates that this learning has met the high standards the RCGP expects for its members.
Who this course is for
This course is aimed at doctors in any clinical setting.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course you'll be able to:
- employ appropriate behaviours and language when interacting with D/deaf and hard of hearing patients
- distinguish between communication preferences and adapt your communication to the patient's needs
- recognise legal requirements (Equality Act, 2010 and Accessible Information Standard, (2016)) to provide reasonable adjustments related to disability
- identify commonly used assistive technologies and apply them to the needs of the patient
