Exploring Behaviour Change Through Sustainability
A look at how we explore sustainability through our introductory course on 'Behaviour Change Interventions: Introductory Principles and Practice'.
Behaviour change is increasingly recognised as critical to tackling global challenges, from climate change to public health. In our Introductory Course, learners explore the core principles of behaviour change, using real-world sustainability challenges as engaging examples. This approach makes abstract concepts tangible and helps learners see how the same frameworks can be applied in any context, whether in health, education, policy, or everyday life.
Week 1 – Defining and selecting behaviours to change. Learners identify behaviours that contribute to energy use and discuss ways to reduce it.
Week 2 – Introduction to the COM-B model. Through quizzes and peer review activities, learners apply the COM-B model to understand how capability, opportunity, and motivation influence behaviours such as food waste and active travel.
Week 3 – Selecting Intervention Types and Policy Options in intervention design. Learners then tackle the behaviour of reducing customer use of new plastic bags. They explore different intervention types and assess them using the APEASE criteria.
Week 4 – Selecting Behaviour Change Techniques. The last week of the course introduces the final step in the Behaviour Change Wheel process. Learners apply Behaviour Change Techniques (BCTs) to real-world challenges, such as encouraging recycling.
Transferable skills for any context.
Our Introductory Course combines theory with practice, giving learners the tools to design interventions that make a difference. By using engaging, real-world examples, we help learners understand behaviour change in a way that is practical and relevant, to support application to any context.
