We are in a unique position to offer tuition, research opportunities in internationally recognised laboratories and an appreciation of the multi-disciplinary nature of Biosciences research.
UCL is recognized as one of the world's best research environments within the field of biological and biomedical science.
The MRes in Biosciences will provide the opportunity to undertake a major research project and gain in-depth knowledge in the selected subject and to develop the generic skills required for the written and verbal communication of science. The programme is designed for students who wish to undertake a PhD degree or to convert from other relevant disciplines and for those who wish to enter employment in an advanced capacity in industry or the public sector in the field of Bioscience.
Graduating on ONE of the following subjects
- Biology of Ageing and Age-related Disease
- Biochemistry
- Biotechnology
- Cell Biology
- Computational Biology
- Evolution and Origins of Life
- Genetics
- Integrative Anatomy
- Neuroscience
- Pharmacology
- Stem Cells and Developmental Biology
- Structural Biology
The Division includes the Departments of Cell & Developmental Biology (CDB), Neuroscience, Physiology & Pharmacology (NPP), Genetics, Evolution & Environment (GEE) and Structural & Molecular Biology (SMB) and hosts the Centre for Stem Cells & Regenerative Medicine, the UCL Genetics Institute and the Institute for Healthy Ageing. Visit the departmental websites for further information.
- Degree Programme
The course is only available full-time and lasts one year. The programme consists of three components adding to the total of 180 credits required for completion of a Masters degree.
1. An extended research project module (120 credits)
Students undertake a laboratory-based research project in the specialized subject stream in which they wish to graduate.
The project will be supervised individually and enable the student to gain hands on experience in original research. The project will be assessed by an oral presentation, submission of a dissertation and subject to oral examination.
2. One taught subject-based module (15 credits)
Students will take a taught module selected from a range of modules within UCL approved for the subject stream. The module will provide tuition in the academic basis of the selected subject and teaching will be research led.
3. Three skills-based taught modules - core for all students
a. Biosciences Research Skills (15 credits)
This course will provide the basic skills for planning research and the written, verbal and visual communication of science
To be assessed by assignments and coursework
b. The Scientific Literature (15 credits)
This course will provide the skills required for the acquisition and critical analysis of information from primary scientific literature in the biosciences and presenting a critical review in oral and written form
To be assessed by assignments and coursework
c. Biosciences Seminar Series (15 credits)
Biosciences Seminar Series: This course will provide experience of the multidisciplinary and collaborative nature of Bioscience research and the skills to write a literature review and to communicate specialized scientific research to a non-expert.
To be assessed by coursework
