School of Pharmacy Translational Research & Innovation Group (TRIG)

The Translational Research & Innovation Group (TRIG) at UCL's School of Pharmacy is dedicated to advancing pharmaceutical sciences by fostering cross-disciplinary collaborations, securing research funding, and promoting innovative drug discovery and development approaches. Our work aims to bridge the gap between laboratory research and clinical application, ultimately benefiting patient care.

Our Mission

Our mission is to be world-leading in the science and practice of discovering, producing, preparing, supplying, reviewing, and monitoring medications.

Key Research Challenges

TRIG focuses on addressing major challenges in pharmaceutical sciences, including:

  • Improving drug discovery and development efficiency

  • Understanding the molecular basis of diseases

  • Utilizing big data to improve patient outcomes

  • Developing advanced drug delivery technologies

  • Creating new curative drugs for high unmet medical needs

  • Personalized diagnostics and medicine

Research Strategy

Our research strategy is built around three core themes:

1. Celebrating and Promoting Diversity in Research

  • Encouraging a broad range of perspectives to drive innovation in pharmaceutical sciences.

2. Championing Cross-Disciplinarity

  • Increasing engagement with research at the School of Pharmacy.

  • Building networks across UCL, healthcare providers, industry, and global academic institutions.

  • Supporting partnerships with PharmAlliance, ULLA, CMORE, HKU, and other leading organisations.

  • Translating discoveries from the lab to the clinic.

3. Connecting with the Community

  • Engaging with postgraduate students to support research and teaching visibility.

  • Strengthening links with external stakeholders, funders, and healthcare professionals.

Our Committee’s Role

The TRIG Committee plays a vital role in:

  • Enhancing teaching visibility and signposting opportunities for postgraduate students.

  • Facilitating joint grant applications for research programmes within UCL and CDT initiatives.

  • Increasing visibility to funders and stakeholders to strengthen research collaborations.

Current Initiatives

Short-Term Objectives:

  • Define the objectives and aims of the TRIG steering group.

  • Develop this webpage to promote TRIG's activities and attract collaborators.

  • Work with TRO (Translational Research Office) to establish TRIG’s place in UCL’s research landscape.

  • Identify networking and innovation funding opportunities available at UCL.

  • Contribute to the development of a 7th TIN (Therapeutic Innovation Network) focused on computational and AI-driven drug research.

Long-Term Goals:

  • Secure a large multidisciplinary grant on drug repurposing.

  • Develop programme grant proposals targeting specific drug categories.

  • Explore the potential for an MRC CDT bid in Computational Drug Development.
