Roberto Mayor and Saverio Tedesco were recently honoured at UCL's annual celebration of those achieving academic excellence. Both professors gained Fellowships in prestigious medical science institutions

Congratulations to Professor Roberto Mayor and Professor Saverio Tedesco, who recently attended UCL's annual celebration of honours, Recognising Academic Excellence Reception. Roberto had been awarded Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Sciences and Saverio had gained Fellowship of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. Both men hold leadership positions in the Research Department of Cellular and Developmental Biology (CDB) within the UCL Division of Biosciences. They are shown below, each raising a glass at the UCL Reception!

Saverio's various endeavours include his role as lead investigator of two research projects funded by The Francis Crick Institute ('the Crick'), based on his world-leading research in muscle regeneration and neuromuscular conditions. He recently gave a talk to the general public at the Crick, which said:

Professor Francesco Tedesco leads a team at the Francis Crick Institute, working to find better treatments for muscle wasting conditions These conditions cause muscles to weaken over time, making everyday activities harder and affecting quality of life. While some treatments exist, there’s still no cure. That’s why we’re proud to fund two of Professor Tedesco’s current research projects.
In his talk, Saverio shared updates from both projects, exploring how his team is using cutting-edge technology to better understand muscle wasting conditions, and the real-world challenges of turning lab research into effective treatments. After the talk, at which members of the Crick were present, there was a Q&A and networking session, where members of the public could find out more about the work of the Crick both in this field and more generally.
Roberto Mayor's lab has also been busy in publishing on four projects - more details are given in a separate news item.
