UCL Centre for Integrative Anatomy Annual Symposium 2025
5 January 2025
We are hosting our annual in-person symposium next month, on Thursday 20th February 2025. Our theme for the conference is 'functional morphology', and the talks (from 10am-5pm) will be given primarily by early career researchers from a variety of disciplines and institutions.
It's that time of year again! Yes, the UCL Centre for Integrative Anatomy is hosting its annual in-person symposium next month, on Thursday 20th February 2025. Keep a look-out (here and on social media) for upcoming full details of the whole day's schedule and registration information.
Registration is compulsory but is completely free of any charges, with refreshments and lunch included. You just need to get yourself here!
Our theme will be, as before, based on our specialist field of functional morphology - the study of the relationship between an organism's form (or shape) and its function. This field is important when considering evolution, for example, since function is considered to influence patterns of phenotypic integration and is at the intersection of an organism and its environment. Thereby, as it develops, the organism shapes (and reshapes) its form.
As UCL's interdisciplinary research centre for every aspect of anatomy - comparative, evolutionary, developmental, medical and forensic - you can expect a day of multi- and inter-disciplinary talks around the functional morphology theme. The symposium will be hosted by the Centre's Dr Phil Cox, Associate Professor in Anatomy in the Research Department of Cell & Developmental Biology, Division of Biosciences, UCL.
Our 17 confirmed speakers are mainly early career researchers (ECRs) in this field, thus this symposium also provides ECRs with a platform for sharing their work, ideas and findings, and the opportunity to network and discuss all this with their peers and those with longer experience in the field. We shall also enjoy a keynote presentation from one of our speakers from mainland Europe.
There will also be plenty of networking time for meeting and getting to know others in an informal setting - whether over the two, half-hour coffee/tea breaks, the extended lunch break, or after the close of the symposium over refreshments at a local hostelry (just 7 minutes' walk away).
All sessions will be held on the ground floor of UCL's Anatomy Building in Gower St, London WC1E 6BT, which is wheelchair-friendly, and close to a plethora of public transport, including Kings Cross/St Pancras and Euston train/tube stations, Euston Square and Warren St tube stations, and a variety of buses. If you need particular adjustments to help with accessibility, or any aspect of the symposium (e.g., dietary requirements), then please let us know at the time of booking.
We hope to see you there!
