Marc Amoyel and Diego Sainz de La Maza publish on Cell-cycle exit and stem cell differentiation

In this paper, Diego Sainz de la Maza characterised the relationship between cell cycle regulators and stem cell differentiation. We found that blocking cell cycle exit also prevented differentiation. This effect was mediated through changes in cellular metabolism.
In collaboration with the Bökel lab (Univ. Marburg), Drs Diego Sainz de la Masa and Marc Amoyel (UCL Cell and Developmental Biology) showed that metabolism, and in particular mitochondrial activity changes during normal differentiation. Finally, increasing mitochondrial mass could rescue differentiation in cells lacking cell cycle inhibitors, which now continued proliferating even as they differentiated, indicating that cell cycle exit and differentiation are coordinated through the regulation of cellular metabolism.
