Understanding body plan diversity: investigating post‑metamorphic skeletal growth in sea urchins

19 March 2021

Post‑metamorphic skeletal growth in the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus and implications for body plan evolution.

Prof Paola Oliveri and Dr Jeff Thompsom highlight the role of skeletogenic proteins in accretionary skeletal growth and cell proliferation in the addition of new metameric tissues. We gain an understanding of the developmental evolution of the sea urchin body plans on macroevolutionary timescales.
