The ISMB Spring Term Seminar Series starts this week and we are delighted to host Professor Peter Shepherd, a former member of SMB, as our first speaker!
“Genomic based approaches to develop population specific precision medicine for Polynesian peoples”
Abstract:
The seminar will describe systematic studies to identify population specific coding variants in Polynesian peoples combined with a large deep phenotyping study of metabolic parameters related to diabetes and obesity. This is linked to functional studies of gene variants linked to specific metabolic phenotypes and then clinical studies to understand how this information can be used to guide precision medicine approaches. The talk will cover details of specific focus on a variants in the CREBRF and SLC22A3 genes that have shown strong links to obesity and metformin efficacy respectively.
