Functional Morphology - Annual Symposium - 20 February 2025 - UCL Centre for Integrative Anatomy
20 February 2025, 9:15 am–5:00 pm
The UCL Research Department for Cell & Developmental Biology is delighted that its Centre for Integrative Anatomy is to hold the annual multi-disciplinary symposium on functional morphology, in person, on 20 February in UCL's Anatomy Building, London. Registration is compulsory but free and will feature 17 speakers, mostly early career researchers, who will refer to a variety of species, including birds, snakes, dogs, horses and humans, in order to explore the relationship between the shape of parts of the body and developmental stages - both in lifecycle and evolutionary terms - including the impact of environmental changes. Their findings have implications for fields as disparate as artificial joints, skull surgery and conservation.

You are warmly invited to join us, in person, for our full day UCL Centre for Integrative Anatomy Annual Symposium 2025 on interdisciplinary aspects of functional morphology. Our FREE event on Thursday, 20 February will delve into the fascinating world of anatomy and morphology, particularly focusing on our specialist area of the inter-relationship between form and function. Get ready to connect with experts and fellow enthusiasts in the field. To attend, register here (completely free of charge and inclusive of all refreshments and lunch) - places are already being booked up quickly!
At this in-person gathering in London, UK's Bloomsbury area with its amazing history and transport links, you'll have the opportunity to engage in discussions, attend insightful lectures, and participate in plenty of informal opportunities for socialising and networking. Whether you're a student, researcher, or just someone curious about anatomy and its inter-relation with fields such as palaeontology, biomechanics, imaging and the like, this symposium is the place to be!
We have a raft of confirmed speakers, who are predominantly in the early stages of their research career (so, ECRs) and who will provide (c. 15-minute) summaries of their latest work and findings. We also have a notable keynote speaker in Brandon Kilbourne, an evolutionary biologist with undergraduate training in engineering. By combining distinct knowledge sets of evolution and biomechanical function, he addresses questions regarding morphological diversity through major groups of terrestrial vertebrates. His primary interest is in the limb anatomy and locomotion of mammals, but he has also worked on non-avian dinosaurs and birds.
A full timetable of speakers and topics appears below, from which you can see that there are ample opportunities for informal discussion and networking in the two refreshment breaks and over an extended lunch period. After the official close of the meeting, we further invite attendees to join us in a local hostelry to continue socialising and sharing. This will be at the Prince of Wales Feathers public house at 8 Warren St, Greater, London W1T 5LD, just 7 minutes’ walk from the conference venue.
Reserve your spot, free-of-charge, now and get ready for a day full of learning and networking!
The day will be hosted by the Centre's own Dr Phil Cox, Associate Professor of Anatomy, and supported by other Centre members, including Professor Susan Evans (Centre Head), Professor Mehran Moazen and Professor Sandra Martelli, and Associate Professors Dr Laura Porro and Dr Ryan Felice, amongst others.
This event is generously supported by The Company of Biologists and also by the Anatomical Society.
