The phenotype of an individual can be affected not only be the individual’s own genes (direct genetic effects) but also by genes of social partners and the microbiota (indirect genetic effects). Laboratory mice and rats are an ideal system to investigate indirect genetic effects as their environment - cage mates and diet in particular - is well-characterised and controlled by the experimenter. My research has leveraged populations of genetically heterogeneous rodents to quantify the overall contribution of indirect genetic effects, characterise their architecture and dissect the underlying biological mechanisms.
