Julia Montana Lopez

I am currently finishing my Biomedical Sciences BSc undergraduate studies at UCL and collaborating with Prof Francois Balloux's lab to try to better understand the patterns of emergence of drug resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In 2013 I did a short collaboration in Prof Pedro Carvalho's lab at the Centre for Genomic Regulation, Barcelona, looking at organelle biogenesis.

Although my background is centred on cell biology, I have become increasingly interested in elucidating the extent to which human conducts and public health policies, in addition to biological factors, influence the spread of infectious diseases. Through my research at UCL I am trying to understand the role that variation in mutation rates between Mycobacterium tuberculosis lineages plays in the emergence of drug resistance.
