The Research Department of Structural and Molecular Biology (SMB) is part of the Division of Biosciences in the Faculty of Life Sciences and partners with the Department of Biological Sciences at Birkbeck College to comprise the Institute for Structural and Molecular Biology shared by UCL and Birkbeck.

Welcome

SMB, previously known as the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, provides a stimulating and diverse research and training environment of international standing where important and exciting areas of modern biology, biotechnology and medicine are investigated at the atomic, molecular, cellular and organism level.

Today we are a vibrant and diverse research community pursuing cutting edge research.

History of SMB

SMB at UCL has a long and illustrious pedigree. Anatomy goes back to the foundation of the College, and the Chairs of Anatomy and Comparative Anatomy were among the original 24 Chairs.

The majority of our laboratories and research spaces are located in the UCL Darwin Building on Gower Street, formerly the site of 'Macaw Cottage', a residence of Charles Darwin's.

The main reception to the building is accessed via Darwin Walk, off Malet Place, entered via Torrington Road.
