Title: "New and exciting story on cytonemes"
Speaker: Dr Steffen Scholpp - Associate Professor, Cell and Developmental Biology, University of Exeter (research profile)
Venue: JZ Young LT, Anatomy Building (map)
Host: Professor Steve Wilson (email)
Abstract: We have completed our first Exeter-story on cytonemes: In our recent project, we asked the question how the formation of Wnt cytonemes are controlled. Surprisingly, we found that the Wnt/PCP signalling pathway is important to induce Wnt8a cytonemes. Especially, Ror2 seems to be important to control the number of cytonemes formed by the cell in the early zebrafish embryo. This has unexpected consequences: Wnt/PCP signalling activation in the Wnt producing cell induces an up regulation of Wnt cytonemes and thus an increased activation of Wnt/beta-catenin signalling in the neighbouring cells. At the moment, we are in the process of submitting this story.
