UCL Partners with RVC and LSHTM to Appoint NC3Rs Regional Programme Manager

UCL is pleased to announce that it has partnered with The Royal Veterinary College and The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine to appoint an NC3Rs Regional Programme Manager to work across all three institutions, initially for a two year period.

The NC3Rs is the UK's National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research and launched their Regional Programme Manager project in 2015. This project enables the placement of NC3Rs Managers into small university clusters with the aim of sharing best practice in the 3Rs, promoting 3Rs advice, and increasing awareness and access opportunities.

Some of the benefits the Regional Manager will bring to UCL are detailed below:

  • Working with the partner institutions to identify priority 3Rs areas on which to focus.
  • Providing advice on opportunities to implement the 3Rs in specific programmes of research, including input into project licence applications, as well as identifying opportunities for institution-wide activities such as tissue sharing.
  • Raising awareness and disseminating the work of the NC3Rs, including funding opportunities, events, online training resources, publications and guidelines.
  • Maximising the dissemination of new 3Rs approaches developed through NC3Rs-funded science, including identifying local media opportunities as appropriate.
  • Organising workshops and other events targeted to local needs (e.g. dedicated training for PhD students).
  • Encouraging 3Rs research and knowledge exchange, including fostering collaboration between departments, universities, SMEs and industry at a regional level.
  • Horizon scanning for research and technologies with 3Rs potential and connecting them with end-users, for example through the NC3Rs CRACK IT open innovation schemes.
  • Supporting implementation of a self-assessment tool for universities to benchmark their performance on the 3Rs.
